This week felt like it was almost never-ending at times, as most weeks often do, but thank goodness it’s Friday! Last night I had a strong rum punch that got me in the mood for the upcoming weekend, which has set itself up to be quite promising. From a personal alcohol licence course, to London’s Burger Fest, then dinner with a friend and potentially brunch on Sunday; this weekend has the potential to be the right balance of a little work and a lot more play.
April Shower Ingredients
It’s not every day that I get a cocktail named after me at one of London’s most sought after bars that resides on the 31st floor of Europe’s tallest building, but this Spring I got lucky and a fruity cocktail called April Showers debuted of Aqua Shard’s bar menu. I love this cocktail and not just because of its name but also because it includes all of the main ingredients I look for in a cocktail (bar the rum but you can’t have it all can you?). I know you are probably thinking I am biased but I am proud to say that independent customers clearly agree as April Showers is one of Aqua Shard’s most popular drinks.
Whenever I go to a new bar, I always look for a cocktail that lists passion fruit or lychee as one of the ingredients and this drink has both of my favourite fruits plus so much more. The exciting texture with the smoothness of the egg white and flavour with the brightness of the basil and comfort of the vanilla keeps you wanting more.
April Showers Cocktail
I firmly believe that the party gets started right at home and where better to begin than in the kitchen? If you are not following a recipe and want to experiment, there are some things to consider when making your own cocktail. I treat drinks much like I treat food. First I think about the taste, making sure it is balanced in flavour, i.e. something sweet, something sour, something fresh and something flavourful be it floral or spicy but I am sure you get my gist. The next thing to think about are the current trends; are there particular pairings that are popular at the moment that you wouldn’t normally think of? What can you learn from others? And lastly choose your vessel carefully, what piece of glassware is going to enhance the overall appeal of your cocktail?

I never used to do much on the weekends because I was always working at my pop-up shop but recently I have started taking advantage of my weekends and a nice cocktail is a great way to kick things off! Enjoy the weekend, drink a little, be merry and keep smiling. April Showers isn’t the only masterpiece on the current Aqua Shard menu so go and see the other delights quickly before their menu changes soon.

Live, Love, Eat!

- 35ml Vodka
- 35ml Lychee Juice
- 5ml Absinthe
- 5ml Vanilla
- 15ml Peach Liqueur
- 15ml Passion Fruit Purée
- 5 Basil Leaves
- 1 Egg White
- 2 Handfuls of Ice Cubes
- Put all the ingredients into a shaker and shake away from you for about a minute, first without ice (dry shake) and then again for about 30 seconds with ice.
- Strain over ice into a glass of your choice and garnish with grapes or basil.
- You will need a shaker for this recipe.
