Little Island With Big Flavour – St. Croix Food & Wine Festival

April 24, 2012

Whilst we all know Jamaica is the “Capital of the West Indies”, I recently went to St. Croix for the St. Croix Food & Wine Experience and I was pleasantly surprised. Not because I doubted they had good food on the island but from my Food Festival Tour, I have had more lows than highs.

Nicknamed “America’s Caribbean” one would think that there would be direct flights from New York, but unfortunately not. After arriving on the island I realise that the Caribbean warmth and sea breeze is worth the voyage. Even though I have been grateful for the lack of winter this year, landing in St. Croix reminded me that there is no better weather than that of the Caribbean and this was topped off by drinking refreshing (unprocessed) Coconut Water.

The first event we attended was Taste of St. Croix. This event started at 6pm but went on into the early hours of the morning. With endless booths to taste from it highlighted the islands yumminess. I was surprised that I was able to find more food than I could manage to eat. From delicious meaty burgers that had sweet apples, tangy pickles to fresh thick lobster to calaloo, there was definitely something for everyone.

I discovered Man Soup for the first time; it has Mahi-Mahi, Shrimp, Plantain, Sweet Potatoes and other root veggies.I am not sure exactly what it does but judging from the name and the giggles from the server, I am thinking that men this could be your kinda sustenance.

The atmosphere was priceless. The evening’s breeze was soothing, wine and liquor was plentiful and the Cruzans were out in numbers to dance to the Caribbean rhythms. This is what the Caribbean is about: nice vibes.

The following night we went to Sunset BBQ. The venue, Fort Frederik, was rustically beautiful and had potential for awesomeness, but it was drenched with artificial lighting that took away from its mystique. The food at this event was lacking and the entertainment even more so.

St. Croix provides sun, sea and yumminess. The island allows you to relax and take a moment of respite whether it’s while sunbathing or driving through the winding hills. See you at Taste of St. Croix next year.
