My “Last Supper”

May 3, 2012

If you could have one meal before you went on a strict regime of diet and exercise what would it be? I made this impromptu decision a few days ago and I wanted my “Last Supper” to be something creamy and cheesy, something that I could remember over the next two months and it would motivate me to exercise more and eat those greens! I decided that I would have something, anything in fact, with macaroni & cheese.

Artisanal Bistro was recommended and that’s where I found myself. This restaurant had the feel of fine dining that was stuck in the 80’s, with its torn seating and stiff waiters (except our nice waiter Michael), but I was too excited to indulge in the best things for my palette yet worst things for my waistline, to change course.

Foie Gras Torchon

I started with Foie Gras Torchon, which had the rich flavours I loved but a texture that I didn’t crave. My partner in crime had clams on the half shell, beware they only give four, which felt a little stingy on their part.

We both had the Aged Hanger Steak cooked medium that came with pomme frites and I got the Organic Black Truffle Mayonnaise, even though I don’t like mayonnaise I’d never had Mayonnaise with Black Truffle. Then gluttony took over and I also ordered the Macaroni Gratin. The steak was beautifully cooked and seasoned to perfection, it looked small on the plate but since I savoured every bite as I trod closer down the road to abstinence it was filling.

The Macaroni wasn’t the best I’d ever had but I appreciated the quality cheeses, (Gruyère and Parmesan),  and the lightly crusted topping that is key to any good mac & cheese. I love my macaroni and cheese to be baked and sit more like a pie and this just wasn’t creamy enough. As for the Mayonnaise, it didn’t do anything for me and seemed to be a ploy to make me pay an extra $2.50 for a dollop of nothing. I stopped eating my main course to save space for my desert and took my last few sips of subtly sweet Riesling.

Mac&Cheese

For the last load of calories we ordered the Crème Brûlée ‘Le Cirque’ and the Warm Chocolate Tart. The Crème Brûlée was pleasant, nothing to write home about, the ‘Le Cirque’ is a tribute to the chef’s previous place of work but doesn’t seem to add any excitement to the desert. However the Warm Chocolate Tart was definitely yummy, it was a combination of a tart with a slightly crusty outer layer and a molten cake with a gooey centre. As I’ve said before I’m a sucker for hot and cold deserts and sweet and salty, and this had each component perfectly balanced on one plate.

Crème Brûlée

In an ideal world each meal should be enjoyed as though it was our “Last Supper”, since I have to be strict for the next two months I will live vicariously through your meals.

So I’m a little (meaning extremely) disappointed that you both ordered the same entree (even though it looks incredible). Kinda weak… But this may be coming from a place of pure jealousy… who knows.
