Gourmet Burger

May 16, 2012

A friend, and yummytruth reader, told me about an onion jam she makes while I was going on about my love for fig jam. I had never had onion jam and never thought about making my own jam but the way she described it, “just throw some of x, some of y and z in the pan and let it do it’s thing” I couldn’t resist but try since it sounded so simple.

Raw Sliced Red Onions

The onion jam recipe tastes great with a variety of things, cheese, sandwiches but I had it with a burger. I named it TD Burger, with seasoned ground sirloin, some spinach to make me feel healthy and creamy goat cheese, on toasted Challah bread; it is too good to share.

Recycle Jam Jars

The recipe is not only gratifying in flavour but when it’s cooking it the onions are beautiful in colour and the smell of the wine is mouth-watering. So if you want to impress a special someone, or instead of having something baking when you have an open house, or if you want to give a special gift, make some jam!

  3. 1/2 tablespoon paprika
  4. 1/2 tablespoon sage
  5. 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  6. 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder
  7. 1/2 egg, beaten
  8. salt & pepper
  9. 2 Challah bread rolls
  10. Honey Dijon Mustard
  11. Goat Cheese
  12. Baby Spinach
For Onion Jam
  1. 2 Medium red onions, thinly sliced
  2. 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  3. 1/4 cup olive oil
  4. 1 cup red wine
  5. 1/4 tsp salt
  6. 1/4 tsp black pepper
  7. 1/4 cup honey
  8. 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
For Burger
  1. Mix the ground sirloin with onions, paprika, sage., Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt & pepper, before adding the egg.
  2. Turn on the frying pan and spray with cooking spray over medium heat, while making the burger patties in your hand gently.
  3. For medium burgers cook for 3 minutes on each side.
  4. Toast the Challah bread and assemble your burger with the other ingredients. Don’t forget your onion jam.
For Onion Jam
  1. In a medium saute pan, heat the oil and butter over medium to high heat.
  2. Add onions and season with salt and pepper for about 5 minutes before adding the wine.
  3. Lower the heat to medium until the wine is reduced (about 10 minutes)
  4. Meanwhile in a separate small pan add honey on a high heat for a few minutes before adding the balsamic vinegar and simmer.
  5. Once most of the wine is gone, add the honey mixture to the onions, and let it “do its thing” over a low heat for 10-15 minutes.
  6. Transfer to a jar and let it cool.
Notes
  1. Feel free to try this recipe with different types of onions, different wines or different vinegars to create new combinations.

Great post! I’ve never heard of onion jam before and it looks amazing. The flavors sound amazing! Have you ever tried canning it if you make a larger batch or just keep it in the fridge?

I have never tried canning it, but that sounds like a good idea. I usually keep it in the fridge up to 2 weeks, but maybe that is because I end up eating it with everything so it doesn’t last much longer 🙂

I’m making my version of ketchup this week so I’ll add your onion jam to my repertoire. I’ll let you know how it turns out!!

Oh great! I’d definitely be interested in trying your version of ketchup since I’m not a fan of the stuff on the shelf. It should be a great pairing.
